Who are we?
The library carries out interdisciplinary activities related to literature, music, visual arts, and multimedia, responding to the needs of the local community. Our cultural offer is addressed to all age and social groups. Most of our users are children and young people, families, and seniors.
Culture Station is the main library and a modern cultural center in Rumia. Its unique design and functionality were recognized with first prize in the international Library Interior Design Awards in the category of single-space libraries. Most cultural and educational events take place there.
The volunteer will work mainly at the Janowo Library, with occasional opportunities to join activities at Culture Station. Through cooperation with associations and hobby groups, we regularly organize meetings with writers and travelers, concerts, theater performances for adults and children, conferences, workshops (theater, philosophy, photography, dance), library lessons, and reading-related events.
Apart from work in Rumia our volunteers on everyday basis live in Gdynia (250 000 inhabitants), which together with Gdansk and Sopot builds agglomeration called Tricity (750 000). Gdynia is a young city with modernistic architecture, built in the early XX century. It attracts many tourists and inhabitants with beautiful beaches in the city centre, music and film festivals and a couple of universities.
Our ESC volunteers live in a few flats in different districts of the city and work in more than 10 different locations (libraries, NGOs, neighbourhood centres etc). Together with their mentors (local volunteers) they create a large, international and lively community of around 35 young people.
Project is funded by European Union within European Solidarity Corps programme.
